I’d always had a fascination with men in white socks but an ad on TV sealed the deal for me. I was about 14. The ad was for Gillette Contour Plus. A handsome, tanned, muscular man works out, wearing only pristine white crew socks and white boxer shorts.

I fixated on the ad, constantly thought about it. Never forgotten it.
